Highlights from January 2022

For the first time in the last 10 years, I was able to spend more time ringing in January. The species composition is quite different from what I'm used to.

The highlights for this month are the two Fieldfares (Turdus pilaris) that I've ringed. Those are my first Fieldfares (for this site and in general) so you can imagine the levels of adrenaline and joy that I had.

I hope I'll have time in February as well so I could try and ring a few more of those beautiful northern visitors. For now no sign of Redwing, but there is still time.

Here are the totals for January and a few photos(and a video) of the highlights:

Middle Spotted Woodpecker - 1

Sombre Tit - 3

Blue Tit - 8

Great Tit - 37

Long-tailed Tit - 1

Firecrest - 2

Goldcrest - 1

Nuthatch - 2

First ringing for 2014

Couple of weeks ago, I finally made my first ringing for 2014. The results were not great, but I'm very happy that I found time to set up the mist nets. The other good news is that I managed to keep my feeder relevantly full, so even if this winter there were no ringed birds, I can say that my friends didn't starve.

For the few hours of ringing , the results were only two Great tits(Parus Major). The weather was foggy and the nets got wet very, very fast. After that there was no point of continuing.

I hope that soon, I'll find time for more ringing and more posting.

Blackcap domination !

On 21.07.2012(Saturday) I got up at 5:00AM. I took my brothers bike and I began the 12km journey from Belogradchik to Veshtica. The first thing that I saw was the sun...

At 6:30AM I managed to set up the mist nets and the ringing started. For the whole ringing session I ringed 12 birds:

-1-Blackbird
-1-Song Thrush
-1-Great tit
-1-Tree sparrow
-7-Blackcaps
-1-Olive-tree Warbler(Hippolais olivetorum)(young)- I will make separate post about this bird with pictures and video.

Very interesting for me was the fact that whole of the seven Blackcaps were females. Maybe they are migrating before or after the males, but I didn't even see any male  Blackcaps. Most of the other ringed birds were young. Here are some pictures from today :

Tomorrow I will try to make some ringing, photos and videos .
